Arborist work in Advancetown
Advancetown is a rural community in the Gold Coast hinterland, wrapped around Advancetown Lake, the water held back by Hinze Dam. Properties are large, often steep, and heavily treed with tall eucalypts on the ridges and rainforest species in the gullies. Homes and sheds are typically cut into the hillside at the end of a long gravel driveway.
A local arborist comes out to assess the tree, the slope and the access, and puts the price in writing.
What makes Advancetown different
- Slope. Many trees stand above or below the house on a grade where nothing can be dropped freely.
- Height. Mature hinterland eucalypts such as spotted gum, tallowwood and blackbutt can be very tall, with heavy limbs.
- Access. Long, narrow driveways, tight turns, and soft ground after rain limit what machinery can reach the site.
- Distance. Crews travel further, so it makes sense to deal with several trees in one visit.
How the work is usually done
Because machines often cannot get close, most tree work out here is done by a climber using ropes. Branches and trunk sections are cut and lowered under control to a safe landing area, then cut up on the ground. Where possible the wood is left on site as stacked rounds or spread mulch rather than carried back up the hill.
Common jobs:
- removing dead or hazardous trees above houses, sheds and water tanks;
- reducing heavy limbs over roofs and driveways;
- clearing storm damage from tracks and fences;
- lifting branches along driveways so vehicles can pass.
Vegetation rules on rural land
On hinterland properties the City of Gold Coast's vegetation controls are much more likely to apply than in the suburbs. The City regulates clearing through its City Plan, and land near waterways and in mapped environmental areas generally has stricter controls. Queensland's koala habitat rules also apply to mapped areas of South East Queensland.
Land around Advancetown Lake and the dam itself is managed by others and is not yours to clear. Before any removal or clearing on your own block, check with the City. Dealing with a tree that is an immediate danger is treated differently, but get advice rather than assume.
Bushfire and storm season
Advancetown is in bushland, and owners often ask about clearing around the house for fire safety. That can be the right thing to do, but there are rules about how much can be cleared and where, so ask the City before you start. Summer storms are the other big risk; fallen trees across driveways can cut a property off.
Prices
Steep, remote jobs with rope work are at the higher end of our Gold Coast tree lopping price guide. Leaving timber on site and grouping jobs are the two best ways to bring the cost down. Call or send the form with photos of the tree and the driveway.
